Helen Swain

Helen is currently a part-time casual teacher in the General Education and Equity Services faculty at New England Institute of TAFE, Tamworth campus. She teaches Humanities’ units such as Human Rights, Comparative Indigenous Studies in the Tertiary Preparation Course, and in the Certificate of General and Vocational Education. She also teaches basic Literacy and Numeracy, ESOL and provides tutorial support to learners with disabilities. She coordinates and teaches in the course Career Education and Employment for Women and the Pathways to Employment, Education and Training designed for clients of NSW Probation and Parole.

Helen is a community representative on the New England Regional Advisory Council for the NSW Community Relations Commission; a member of the not for profit think tank Evoleris and its Project Development Manager for Creating cohesive community through story: CWA, Sudan and Tamworth funded by the Australian Government’s Department of Immigration and Citizenship. She has been a friend to the Sudanese since their arrival in Tamworth in 2005.

Helen has been a volunteer with Australian Volunteers International and taught in Botswana and Mozambique. She has also taught in Romania.

Helen is a member of Australia’s Biodynamic Farmers Association and currently runs a small farm using biodynamic principles.

Qualifications: Master of Professional Studies (Peace Studies); BA(Ethnomusicology); BEd; CELTA; Grad. Cert. in Teaching Students with Special Needs; Certificate IV in Assessment and Workplace Training.
